Okay....... NZ Mason jailed over sorcery claims"A New Zealand man spent a "wretched" night in a Fiji prison cell after frightened residents and police raided his Freemasons meeting, suspecting witchcraft and sorcery.
The man, who didn't want to be named, blamed "dopey village people" for the raid in which 14 members of the Freemasons Lodge of Lautoka were herded into police cars and jailed for the night.
Police also seized lodge paraphernalia, including wands, compasses and a skull.
Yesterday, the man told the Herald that Tuesday night's meeting was "interrupted by a banging on the door and there were these village people and the police demanding to be let in".
Nothing sinister had been going on but "such is the nature of life in Fiji" they were taken to a nearby police station, he said." |

Hah... Quick lunch errand trip was not.... (car accident)
So E and I were talking about how dangerous the intersection by ingles was... Well I became a statistic. Crazy 80+ year old lady pulls out full tilt at me while I'm in the fast lane trying to make a dash across 4 lanes of traffic. I managed to pull around her as she's going through my lane, I pull back hard to try to get back into my lane before the median and oncoming traffic get to be an issue, and missed it by THAT much... about 5 inches according to the skid marks. Anyway, bent the rim, popped a tire. Went through a riggamarole to get my flat donut inflated. (I Drover HER car to get it inflated). Off to tires plus to get it replaced. They were able to work it in while I waited in Waffle House while either the Kings pass me, or Carmen woke from her nap. Turns out the Kings won and I got a ride home. They managed to beat the rim back into shape, and replace my tire today. No other damage. Little Old Lady should be on her way out to pay her portion of the damage now. I don't think getting the authority involved would have made a difference. She'd still drive without a license (I don't think she has one anyway), and she probably doesn't have insurance, etc... Going to go pick it no now. -Tyme |

If you're a Mac user and like Internet radio...
... then you'll love Radio Gaga, which records Internet radio streams. Just released, it's on sale for $20 for the next four days. I wrote the manual and found it *really cool*. :) Disclosure: I get neither money nor direct benefits from making this announcement, or from your purchase. |

Got another phone call from the clinic this morning because the doctor I was supposed to see today before the clinic canceled the appointment was concerned after reading my notes. He wanted me to go to the ER because I might be having a miscarriage. Um, I don't think so. The possiblity of getting pregnant 5 years after a tubal (and it was cut and cauterized, not clipped) is pretty small. Went in for all the blood work this morning. 16 hours of fasting so it should all be accurate. And tomorrow I see a doctor unless something else happens. |

Urgh
Urgh... I had a (very minor) accident with my bike again. x.x First of all, Skinfaxa is OK; I checked her, and she doesn't seem to have suffered in any way. (There may be another scratch or two, but the frame's powder coating is so scratch-happy anyway that it's hard to say whether any of the various nicks she's got are new.) I've been riding her afterwards, too, and everything's been working flawlessly. As for myself, I didn't suffer anything other than a bruised shoulder (the left one, this time; it hurts a bit, but otherwise seems OK, and I imagine the minor amount of soreness there is will be gone again soon enough) and a couple of scratches, notably on my left hands' knuckles (all four), left index finger, left arm (two bigger ones), left knee (another two bigger ones) and left thigh (just one, but that one's the biggest). The way it happened was that the road was slippery due to earlier rain, and I just slid and fell. x.x Chances are I probably should've gone slower, but then, that's something you can always say, and the very fact that I fell is evidence for that, anyway, so it's not per se a helpful statement. Anyhow, I seemed mostly unhurt except for the bleeding (and the fact that my jeans were torn[1]), and there was noone else involved, so I decided to continue to my parents and see if they had some band-aid - it was much closer to them than back to my own place. They did, too, but in the end, they insisted that I see a doctor, anyway; of course, it's Wednesday, which means that doctors are taking the day off to play golf, so despite the fact that it was 4 in the afternoon on a regular working day, I had to go to the ER instead. At least I didn't have to wait for long, although the doctor ultimately did nothing but put on some new bandages on my wounds, too. Afterwards, I went back to my parents, chatted with them for a while, and then continued on my way on Skinfaxa to get a new pair of jeans to replace the pair that got torn (and that, FWIW, was already very stained in various places and in need of replacement, anyway). That's about it so far - tomorrow, I'll see my family doctor, both to get the bandages changed and to have a doctor actually look at everything, one who's not so frenzied that you'll start worrying he might have a heart attack and so frantic that he can't spare the 1/10th of a second to even so much as inquire how you feel. (Seriously, if I hadn't mentioned *three times* that there's more wounds on my leg, wounds that were bleeding, he would've ignored even that - out of sight, out of mind.) In the meantime, I'm not feeling too bad, all in all, but my shoulder hurts now that I'm sitting at the computer, and I'm also annoyed in general. :| 1. Seriously, is there any fabric that's easier to damage than denim? I'm really astounded that it was ever used by workers (such as in the US-American "Old West") at all. Current Mood: annoyed |

Unbelievably bad joke
Today, Senator Ted Kennedy (from my birth state of Massachusetts) voted for a Republican amendment that requires all members of Congress to use the "public option" in the new American healthcare system that is being set up. Senator Kennedy has terminal brain cancer and is currently a heavy user of medical services. His spokesman said: "Sen. Kennedy believes strongly in the public option and its ability to provide quality and affordable healthcare while keeping the insurance companies honest. This was a no-brainer." Via DailyKos. Meanwhile, Canada's healthcare continues to do a good job, although the "single-tier" rhetoric is another bad joke: Members of Parliament get "preferential treatment". Here in Ontario, anytime anyone opens their mouth you can see whether they are a "have" or a "have-not" as far as dental insurance goes. |

Making something
Over the past few days I've made a number of financially ill-advised purchases on the credit card and my overdraft. But they're making me happier in doing something for ME. Pair 180Watt 12v motors (geared output ~180rpm) Wiichuck controller Stub battery terminals Fusebox LM3914 IC Pair 10" pneumatic trolley wheels I've also hauled home a few of the metal boxes that hold the bricks in old electrical storage heaters, and need to go scavenge another one of those cheapo mini scooters that hopefully has an intact set of steering bearings. A few folk already know roughly what I'm up to. I've also noticed my hair's getting bigger at the front without me trying. Reminds me of something appropriate. Gotta get practised with the MIG welder again. Current Mood: okayCurrent Music: Jonathan Coulton - Skullcrusher Mountain |

Phone accessories
2.5mm to 3.5mm adaptor arrived yesterday. Figured it'd be cheaper to buy new regular headphones than more hands-free kits for just using my phone as an mp3-player. Just tried it though. The problem isn't the hands-free kit, it's the socket. From the feel of it, probably a broken solder joint. I have the correct star-drivers to open it up, but will wait until I've finished the workbench before I attempt the repair. I also ordered a microSD card to max out the internal sotrage, and a usb charger cable to mutilate. The Nokia 6300 charges off a 5v 350mA adaptor, and has a USB plug right next to the charging socket, but it does not charge from USB. Bad design Nokia, bad. Going to take a mould of the plug on my extending USB cable for it, cut the plug open, solder on the charging cable plug in paralell, then cast a sheath around it again with the mould and a little PU elastomer. Well, I will if I don't kill the phone trying to fix the headphone socket. Good thing I have that crappy replacement phone on backup duty. All as hoped, will then crimp some nylon-coated steel cable around the lanyard fixing of a retractable lanyard holder, and afix that to a strong belt-loop. Should be just long enough to use as normal, but also mean it's tethered to my person at all times. Plus doubles as a garotte for assasination attempts. Current Mood: hot |

Starry starry night
I'm not one for mysticism or religion. I've had my brushes with it in the past and it always struck me as a bunch of people trying to one up each other with how weird they could be. Of course, I've met some people who are quite genuine about it, and they always make me smile. I don't agree, but I don't have to. You know? I don't believe in UFOs, astral projections, mental telepathy, ESP, clairvoyance, spirit photography, telekinetic movement, full trance mediums, the Loch Ness monster and the theory of Atlantis, no matter how big the paycheck. I make the following statement knowing full well that I'm contradicting myself. I saw my mom last night, and I know she's happy. More accurately, I had a dream about my mom last night. I had come to the island where she was living and after having dinner with her, went for a swim in the ocean. I didn't stay long because there were sharks, but they were more curious than vicious and a couple of cuttlefish swam by and shook tentacles with me. I climbed up a ladder and went back to see my mom again, but she was at this nice little tiki bar by the beach, drinking and having fun with her friends. I called to her and waved goodbye and she smiled and said something I couldn't hear. There was more, but it was a random assortment of boats, some driving around, some more swimming in the ocean stuff. Waking up though, I realized that if there was an afterlife, that's probably what she would be doing. The rational part of my mind knows it was just a dream and I've been thinking about her a lot lately. Especially because I'm getting my scuba gear out and jumping on an inexpensive Nikonos V (which is the underwater camera my mom used to use). The part of my mind that longs to give in to superstition and wonder is pretty happy that she let me stop by. |

Weird games.
I wonder why the game cartridges I always seem to have the most fun with are the weird bootleg multicarts with assorted hacked games, unlicensed games, and what's often referred to as "hong kong originals", which usually seem to be a sort of odd mix involving original (often shoddy) game programming, occasionally with bootlegged popular characters tacked in. Like the "Pandamar" SMB hack on one of my multicarts (significant sprite changes, music changed, title screen changed, color palettes modified, &c.) Or the unlicensed GBADEV.ORG 2004Mbit Competition cart I bought off eBay - All fully-original stuff, "Nintendo Seal of Approval" nowhere to be found. Even states in the intro screen that it has nothing at all to do with the Nintendo company. Was looking at a copy of "Pokemon Jade" on eBay the other day, but it went up to at least $26 I think, more than I felt like paying for one single-game cartridge. For that matter, these multicarts and such seem to be hard to find and getting harder. Game stores that take trade-ins won't touch them, so I can't buy them there. They're amazingly sparse on eBay now, too. And the kiosks selling "Power Joy" stuff at the mall disappeared a while back. Rather annoying.
